Hey Reader,

Ever heard the phrase “Content is King”?

As cliché as it sounds, it still rings true.

But do you know what’s better than just being a king (or queen)? Being a king (or queen) with a loyal, high-value audience.

Because a kingdom without its people is just…well, lonely land.

So, what’s this all about? Here’s your guide to building your audience…

Audience Building: The Cornerstone Of Digital Success

In simple terms, audience building is the art of attracting and engaging a group of individuals (your audience) who resonate with what you do, or say (or sell). It’s about creating a community that shares your interests and values your content.

Remember, your audience is not just a bunch of numbers on your analytics page. They are real people who appreciate your work and could potentially become your customers, clients, or advocates.

The Power Of A High-Value Audience

Having a loyal, engaged audience is like having an unlimited access pass to a concert of possibilities. It’s the best way to validate your ideas, amplify your message, and drive engagement across platforms.

Plus, studies show that businesses with an active audience base have a 50% higher chance of achieving their marketing goals (and yes, that includes sales).

But here’s the real kicker: a high-value audience is your brand’s superpower. They’re your cheerleaders, your frontline marketers, and your dedicated fan club. Imagine having a community like that, backing you up.

Building Your Kingdom: A Step-By-Step Guide

It takes time and consistency to grow your audience. Here are the steps to follow:

Choose your niche. This is about knowing your ‘why’ and who you’re doing it for. Your niche should resonate with your passions and expertise. Think about the common thread in your interests and who would benefit from what you know.

Have a content strategy. It’s not just about consistency but also quality and relevance. It’s about knowing what, when, and where to post. Determine what your audience wants to learn from you and make a plan to deliver that value consistently.

Choose platforms wisely. Different platforms cater to different audience types. You should be where your audience is. Research, experiment, and adapt your strategy to the platforms that work best for you. Don’t exceed your capacity – you may find that at the start it’s better to focus on one platform.

Build your email list from the beginning. Consider this your ‘VIP list’. Emails are direct lines of communication to your audience. You own your audience with your email list, unlike with your social media followers.

Provide heaps of value. The ‘golden rule’ of audience building. Be it informational, educational, inspirational, or entertaining, make sure your audience derives value from your content.

Overcoming Roadblocks

Like any journey, audience building is filled with challenges, but remember, every hurdle is a stepping stone to success.

Struggling with slow growth? Remember, quality trumps quantity. A small, engaged audience is far better than a large, passive one.

Remember, we’re building kingdoms here, not just castles in the air.

If engagement is your concern, it’s all about interaction. Reply to comments, start conversations, host Q&As – make your audience feel seen and heard. This can be a daunting task to manage on your own, and that’s where communities can be your lifesaver. You’ll find a wealth of advice and firsthand experiences from others who have been in your shoes.

Keep Track And Keep Going

Keeping tabs on your progress is not just for the sake of analytics. It helps you understand what’s working and what needs improvement.

Use metrics like audience growth, engagement rates, and audience feedback to tweak your strategies. Know how to track your metrics but also make sure you understand how to interpret these numbers and translate them into action steps.

Building an audience can feel overwhelming, but remember the old adage:

Rome wasn’t built in a day, and your audience won’t be either.

The key is to stay consistent, keep engaging, and celebrate every milestone, no matter how small. And if you ever need a supportive community with some personalized coaching, our Digital Content Lab is just a click away.

Building a high-value audience isn’t a sprint; it’s a marathon. It requires patience, consistency, a targeted content strategy, and, above all, providing heaps of value to your audience. It’s about understanding that your audience isn’t just numbers on a screen but real people who are investing their time in you. So make it worth their while!

And as always, feel free to reply with any questions or feedback – I’d love to hear from you.

Until next time, keep creating, keep engaging, and most importantly, keep going!

  • Start my presentation without telling the audience who I am. I don't NEED to start with the words 'thanks for inviting me' or by explaining how happy I am to be here. It shouldn't be hard. I've watched hundreds of TED talks and I know what a captivating start to a presentation looks like. I must grab their attention. I must make them like me at the beginning. But I've never done it before. I've never launched right into the presentation. I've always started with a thank you, or a summary of who I am...

  • “I’m sorry I’m speaking in front of....who?!” I say in shock. (Grammar pedants don't @ me, it's just how I speak). I've found out I'm giving a conference presentation in ONE WEEK and there will be someone Very Important in the audience. How did I end up here...

  • Have you ever given a presentation that fell flat, Reader? I have. There I was, pouring my heart and soul into a presentation I had worked on for freaking hours. But, as I glanced out at the audience (only for a second because I was trying to remember what I was going to say next), I saw people flicking through their phones. Checking Twitter no doubt. Or that very important work email. Someone had actually nodded off...
